How High Should Your Monitor Be?
The short answer is one sentence. The reason it is the most common thing people get wrong — and how to fix it in a minute — takes a little longer.

Set your monitor so the top of the screen is at or just below eye level, and position it about an arm’s length away — roughly 20 to 40 inches from your face. When your gaze is relaxed and looking straight ahead, it should land in the top third of the screen, and your eyes should travel down, not up, to read the rest. That single arrangement keeps your neck neutral instead of tilted back to see a screen that sits too high, or dropped forward to see one that sits too low, which is the posture most desk workers hold all day without noticing.
Here is how to set it in under a minute:
- Sit back in your chair the way you actually sit, feet flat, and look straight ahead with your head level — do not lean toward the screen.
- Note where your natural, relaxed line of sight hits the monitor. It should meet the screen in the top third.
- Raise or lower the monitor until the top edge of the display sits at or just below your eye level.
- Push the screen back until it is about an arm’s length away — reach out and you should nearly touch it.
- Tilt the top of the screen slightly away from you, around 10 to 20 degrees, so the whole surface faces your eyes squarely.

It is worth understanding why this one adjustment matters so much. A screen set too low — the default for almost every laptop and most stock stands — pulls your head forward and down to read it, and the muscles along the back of your neck and upper back hold that tilt for hours. A screen set too high tips your head back and dries your eyes, because you end up staring through the wider-open part of your eyelids. Eye level, with your head balanced neutrally over your spine, is simply the position those muscles do not have to fight, which is why getting it right so often relieves the low-grade ache people assume is just part of desk work.
If you also work from paper — notes, a printed reference, a second device — give it the same courtesy as the screen. A document holder that sits at the same height and angle as the monitor, beside it or between you and the keyboard, keeps your head from dropping to the desk every few seconds. Constantly looking down to a flat page and back up to an eye-level screen is its own small source of neck strain, and it quietly undoes some of the benefit of getting the monitor height right.
Getting the viewing distance right
Height gets the attention, but distance is half the equation. Too close and your eyes strain to focus and your field of view fills with a single window; too far and you lean in, which pulls your whole spine out of position. An arm’s length is the reliable rule of thumb, and it scales with screen size: a larger panel wants to sit a little further back so you are not swinging your head to see the edges. If you find yourself squinting at that distance, the answer is to increase the system text size or scaling, not to drag the monitor closer — keep the ergonomics and fix the readability in software.
Whatever the distance, give your eyes periodic breaks. The widely recommended 20-20-20 habit — every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds — relaxes the focusing muscles that a fixed screen distance keeps tensed, and it costs nothing.
If your eyes tire even at the right distance, the fix is usually readability rather than posture. Bump up the system text size or display scaling so you are not leaning in to parse small type, and make sure the screen’s brightness roughly matches the brightness of the room around it — a screen glowing far brighter than its surroundings is tiring in the same way oncoming headlights are at night. Those are software and lighting changes, not reasons to break the arm’s-length rule you just set.
Tilt: the adjustment people skip
A screen set at the right height but left perfectly vertical still makes you work, because the bottom of the panel faces your chest rather than your eyes. Tilting the top edge back slightly — on the order of 10 to 20 degrees — squares the whole surface to your line of sight, so the bottom of the screen is as easy to read as the top. It also helps with overhead light: a small backward tilt often moves a ceiling-fixture reflection off the panel. If you wear progressive or bifocal lenses, you may need the screen a touch lower and tilted a little more, because you read through the bottom of the lens and a high screen forces you to tip your head back to find the focal zone.
Glare is the other reason tilt matters, and it is worth solving at the same time. A reflection of a window or a ceiling light washes out part of the screen and makes your eyes work to see through it, and you often fix it with the same small backward tilt plus a change in where you sit relative to the light. Where you can, position the desk so windows fall to your side rather than in front of or behind the monitor. Single, dual, and ultrawide height
For one screen the rule is exactly as above: top edge at or just below eye level, dead center in front of you. For two screens, keep both tops at the same height so crossing from one to the other does not bob your head, and follow the same eye-level rule for the pair. If one monitor is clearly primary, center that one and let the secondary sit to the side. Ultrawides are the exception worth calling out: because they are tall as well as wide, applying the top-at-eye-level rule literally can push the center of a big curved panel uncomfortably high. With a large ultrawide, aim instead to keep your relaxed line of sight in the upper portion of the screen and let the top edge sit a bit above eye level — comfort in the center you actually look at beats a rule applied to an edge you rarely use.
A rotated portrait monitor is the one case where the top-at-eye-level rule bends the other way. Turned tall, a screen easily rises well above eye level, so the thing to protect is the reading zone: keep the part you actually read — usually the top half — within a comfortable downward glance, and accept that the very top of a tall screen will sit high. Portrait screens are great for documents and long feeds; just do not chase the eye-level rule so hard that the whole panel ends up towering over you.
Standing desks change one thing
The height rules do not change when you stand — but your eye level does, so the monitor has to move with you. This is the most common standing-desk mistake: people raise the desk surface and leave the monitor where it was, so a screen that was perfect while seated is now too low while standing, and they spend the afternoon looking down. One more case deserves a mention: if a laptop is your only screen, its keyboard and display are locked together at the wrong relationship — get the screen to eye level and the keyboard is up by your chest; get the keyboard right and the screen is in your lap. The fix is to treat the laptop as either a screen or a keyboard, not both. Prop it on a stand to bring the display toward eye level and add a separate keyboard and mouse below, or dock it and feed an external monitor set to the height rules above. Either way you break the compromise a bare laptop forces on your neck.
