Keyboard and Mouse Ergonomics
Three free changes fix most of it: put the keyboard feet down, bring the mouse in, and stop reaching. Here is the reasoning and the order.

Put your keyboard flat on the desk with its feet folded down, directly in front of you, close enough that your elbows stay near your sides. Put your mouse immediately beside it at the same height, not further forward and not further out. That is most of keyboard and mouse ergonomics, it costs nothing, and it fixes more discomfort than any product on this site. Everything below is the reasoning, plus what to do when the free version is not enough.
The three angles that matter
Your wrist can move in three directions, and comfortable typing means keeping all three close to neutral.
- Extensionis your hand tilting up relative to your forearm. This is the one almost everyone has, and the usual cause is the flip-out feet at the back of the keyboard. They exist to angle the keys toward your eyes, which made sense on a typewriter and does nothing useful on a computer. Fold them down. If anything, a slight negative tilt — the back edge lower than the front — is closer to neutral.
- Deviation is your hand angling outward at the wrist, toward the little finger. It happens because a standard keyboard is symmetrical and your shoulders are not: your forearms come in at an angle, and your hands have to turn to meet the straight rows. This is what splitting and angling a keyboard fixes, and no amount of repositioning a flat board will.
- Pronationis your forearm rotating so your palm faces down. A flat keyboard and a flat mouse both force it. Tenting a keyboard — raising the middle so the halves slope away — reduces it, and so does a vertical mouse, which holds the hand in a handshake position instead.
Height comes from the desk and chair, not the keyboard
Set your chair so your elbows sit at roughly 90 degrees with your shoulders relaxed, and the keyboard so your forearms stay roughly parallel to the floor. If the desk is too high, your shoulders rise to meet it and the strain shows up in your neck and upper back rather than your wrists. If it is too low, you slump forward. A standard desk is around 29 inches, which is above the comfortable typing height for a lot of people. If lowering the desk is not an option, raise the chair and add a footrest so your feet still have a floor. Akeyboard tray under the desk is the other fix, and it is the only one that gets the board below desk height where a tall person needs it.
Distance: the reach is what costs you
The keyboard should be close enough that your upper arms hang near your sides rather than reaching forward. A common mistake is pushing the board away to make room for a laptop, a notepad, or a monitor stand, which puts you into a sustained forward reach and pulls your back off the chair. If your desk is short on depth, that is a monitor armproblem rather than a keyboard problem — moving the screen off its base returns eight to ten inches of depth.
The mouse is the more common offender. A full-size keyboard with a number pad pushes the mouse roughly three inches further right than a tenkeyless one, and every mouse movement then happens with your shoulder internally rotated and your arm abducted. It is a small angle held for thousands of hours, and it is one of the more frequent sources of shoulder and forearm complaints among desk workers. Mouse technique: move from the elbow, not the wrist
Two habits distinguish a comfortable mouse hand from an uncomfortable one. The first is grip pressure: most people hold the mouse far harder than the device requires, which keeps the forearm flexors contracted continuously. Deliberately loosening your grip for a week is one of the highest-return changes available. The second is where the movement comes from. Anchoring the wrist and pivoting the hand concentrates every movement into one joint; moving the whole forearm from the elbow distributes it.
Lower mouse sensitivity encourages the second pattern by requiring larger movements, which is the opposite of the intuitive advice. A large desk mat gives you room to make them. If none of that helps, the device shape is the next lever: a vertical mouse removes the forearm rotation, and a trackball removes the arm movement entirely, which is the answer on a shallow desk with no room to sweep.
Wrist rests: what they are actually for
A wrist rest is a palm rest. It supports the heel of your hand during the pauses between typing so your shoulders are not holding your forearms up all day. It is not somewhere to plant your wrist joint while you type — doing that compresses the underside of the wrist and holds it in extension. The correct height is whatever brings the heel of your palm level with the top of the space bar, which depends on your keyboard rather than your preference. Negative tilt and keyboard trays
Once the feet are down, the next question is whether to go further and tilt the board the other way — back edge lower than the front. On a standard 29-inch desk this is often the only way to get a genuinely neutral wrist, because the desk itself is above the height where your forearms want to be. Some ergonomic boards ship with reverse feet for exactly this; on others a thin wedge under the front edge achieves it.
The more complete version is an under-desk keyboard tray, which drops the typing surface two to four inches below the desktop and usually tilts. It is the only fix that gets the keyboard below desk height on a fixed desk, and it is the reason tall people on standard desks often end up with one. The costs are real: you lose the ability to write on the desktop in front of you, it needs a clear underside that a drawer pedestal may have taken, and the tray adds its own reach distance if it sits too far forward. Measure the underside before you order one.
Alternating, and why it beats optimizing
No single position is good for eight hours, and this is the part that most ergonomics advice underplays. A perfectly set-up keyboard held in one posture all day still loads the same tissues continuously. Small variations are what prevent that: changing the tilt occasionally, standing for part of the day if you have a sit-stand desk, or alternating between two pointing devices.
That last one is worth taking seriously if your mouse hand is the problem. Keeping a trackball on one side and a conventional or vertical mouse on the other, and switching every few days, spreads the load across different muscle groups instead of concentrating it. Some people go further and mouse left-handed for part of the week; it takes about a fortnight to stop feeling clumsy and it halves the exposure on the dominant side. Neither is exotic advice, and both cost less than most of the hardware on this site.
Do these in order
- Fold the keyboard feet down. Free, immediate, and the most common single fault.
- Set desk and chair height so your elbows are near 90 degrees and your feet are supported.
- Move the keyboard closer, directly in front of you, and the mouse in beside it.
- Loosen your mouse grip and lower the sensitivity so you move from the elbow.
- Add a wrist rest at the height that matches your board, if your forearms still feel held up.
- Only then change hardware — a tenkeyless board, an ergonomic keyboard if your wrists deviate, or a different mouse shape if the pain is on that side.
Give each change a week before judging it. And take the ordinary advice seriously: the best posture is the next one, so standing up and moving every half hour does more than any single adjustment on this page.
